LEGACY

For over 30 years, Copacabana Surf Village has stood as a cherished pillar of the Thiaw family legacy. Passed down from father to son, Copacabana, affectionately nicknamed "Copa," embodies the spirit of tradition, hospitality, and passion for the ocean. Situated in the north peninsula of Dakar "Plage de Virage," our surf village serves as a testament to the enduring bond between family, culture, and the sea.

BABACAR THIAW

Senegal Surf Rider President, Entrepreneur and Zero-Waste Pioneer

Meet Babacar, the visionary behind Copacabana: Senegal's locally-owned surf village. His love for surfing began at the tender age of 6, growing up along the shores of "Plage de Virage" where he watched his father ride the waves, scuba dive, and share grilled fish with the community.

During his university years, Babacar funded his education by giving surf lessons to travelers. After graduating, he poured his heart and soul into the restaurant and Surf Village, a legacy passed down from his father who founded the business in 1978.

But it was a pivotal moment in 2010 that changed everything. While surfing with visitors, Babacar was confronted by the sight of plastic pollution in the ocean. This eye-opening experience sparked a determination to make a difference.

Today, as President of the Senegal Surf Rider Foundation, Babacar leads initiatives to protect the ocean and empower local youth. At Copacabana, affectionately known as "Babs" by regulars, he serves up drinks with contagious energy while balancing his time between managing the restaurant and community projects.

His vision extends beyond Senegal's shores. Babacar is on a mission to showcase Africa's vibrant surf community to the world, redefining the continent's identity as a hub for surf enthusiasts, eco-conscious travelers, brands, and environmental-driven organizations.

It is under his leadership, that Copacabana has blossomed into a beacon of Senegal's rich culture and commitment to sustainability.
